Chapter Fourteen

“Why did you let her get so drunk?”

“I’m sorry, I did try to stop her, but she just kept throwing them back. I swear I didn’t even see the chick swallow! She just, like, unhinged her jaw and poured it all down!”

I lift my head up from the table and let out a loud hiccup. “Josh?” I squeak when I see him standing beside the table with Fadi.

Josh pushes a hand through his thick hair, shaking his head slowly as he looks me over. “You doing okay, Josie?”

I nod, a little too aggressively, and the room spins. “Oooh,” I groan before dropping my head back onto the table.

Josh and Fadi’s voices come out muffled with my arms covering my ears. And then there’s a hand on my shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze.

“Do you think you can walk?”

I turn my head to find Josh kneeling at my side. He looks handsome, even if he does have two sets of eyes staring at me. God, I am blitzed. But I think I can walk. I nod, and Josh stands and guides me out of the booth. When I trip, he hoists me up, wrapping his arm around my waist.

“Thatta girl,” he says, guiding me out the door. “You’ve got this.”

Eventually we’re outside, and I inhale the fresh nighttime air. I stick out my tongue and waggle it around. “God, it tastes so much better here.”

Josh looks over at me, arching a brow. “What tastes better here?”

I hum contentedly. “The air.”

He chuckles and then digs his keys out of his pocket, unlocking the car. Opening the passenger side door, he helps me slide inside, careful to ensure I don’t bump my head, which I appreciate.

Once I’m strapped in, he jogs to the driver’s side and joins me in the car. He glances over at me and smiles. “I think the last time I saw you this drunk was when we raided your mom’s whiskey supply and went skinny-dipping in the lake.”

I burst into laughter at the memory of Josh, Daisy, Penelope, and the rest of our friends going to town on the three bottles of whiskey we had found stashed in the garage. We had all gotten drunk and decided to go skinny-dipping in the freezing cold lake. Afterwards, we passed out in my living room, waking up with the worst hangovers and a commitment to never drink again that we all promptly broke a week later.

“I think I’m even more drunk now,” I confess.

Josh chuckles and nods. “Yeah, me too.” He gives my thigh a gentle squeeze as he turns on the car. “Now, let’s get you home.”
